(1907–2003) fue uno de los músicos más versátiles y longevos del jazz. Nacido en Nueva York, fue un pionero del saxofón alto, además de dominar la trompeta, el clarinete, el piano y la composición. Su carrera abarcó ocho décadas, y fue reconocido como arreglista, compositor, director de orquesta y educador. Fue clave en el desarrollo del swing y en la evolución de los arreglos para big bands.

Fue un actor y músico estadounidense. Es conocido por interpretar a Louie el Basurero en la serie de televisión Chico and the Man, y a Dick Hallorann en El resplandor (1980) de Stanley Kubrick. También fue un prolífico actor de doblaje que prestó su voz a Meadowlark Lemon en la serie de televisión animada Harlem Globetrotters, Jazz the Autobot en The Transformers y The Transformers: The Movie (1986), el personaje principal en Hong Kong Phooey, y Scat Cat en la película animada de Disney The Aristocats (1970).

Alcanzó la fama con el sencillo «Rockin’ Robin»- Como compositor, destacaron los temas «Over and Over», más tarde popularizado por The Dave Clark Five en 1965 y «Little Bitty Pretty One», popularizado por Thurston Harris en 1957,Clyde McPhatter en 1962, y los Jackson Five en 1972. Sin embargo Day es recordado por la su versión de 1958 del tema «Rockin’ Robin», que alcanzó el puesto número 2 del Billboard Hot 100 y que llegó a vender más de 1 millón de copias
